Nomination News

The moon was electric with anticipation and excitement as BOTS landed early on the morning of Tuesday January 24th to view the 84th Academy Awards® Nomination Announcements. A deafening roar rolled through Biospace 1 as "The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore" was revealed as one of the final 5 nominees for Best Short Film (Animated).

The celebration continued throughout the day as the studio was inundated with a steady stream of congratulatory calls and interview requests. Many the of short and feature length animated film directors, including Bill and Brandon, shared their reactions to the big news with Animation Magazine. Local affiliate radio and television stations also eagerly reported the news. Red River Radio featured a reaction interview, and LPB, KTBS, and KSLA all featured reports.

The nomination and our subsequent release of the short for free via Vimeo has broadened Morris' popularity. A multitude of publications have featured the short on their sites and blogs. Huffington Post featured the short along with an article. CG Channel noted that it is unusual to be able to view an Oscar-nominated short so easily before the winner is announced, saying Moonbot "has rather refreshingly bucked that trend". The LA Times wrote an in depth piece that touches on all aspects of the film and both the decision and reaction of turning the short into an iPad App, and Motionographer calls "Morris" a "...journey worth watching".

Numberlys: App of The Week

While this has been an exciting time for Morris Lessmore, it has not overshadowed our excitement for Numberlys. In the first week of its release, Numberlys was an iPhone and iPad App of the Week on iTunes, and the LA Times interviewed Lampton and Brandon about the app.

An avalanche of reviews have filtered in since the Numberlys launch. Carisa Kluver of Digital Storytime writes "this has become an app that my 5-year old not only requests constantly, but also one he seems to really understand." Apple Gazette says "It’s magical the way that Moonbot Studios imbue brilliant creativity and pure joy into everything they create...Numberlys is a perfect melding of their glorious animation and the inventive ways they make the reader part of the story."
